I don't know what the answer is but my buddy Tim Miller's a teacher and a damm good one and I'll bet he knows. He probably did a crap load of homework when he was a kid.
I suspect the not-so-good teachers assign more work out of the classroom cause it's easier than having to teach it, but I doubt that's the deal with all of them.
Have a look at this and then come back, I've got more.
Personally I don't buy the argument that parents need to do more but they do have to do some.

Hey coach coach, I need to know my child's teacher(s) is going to come to my office and help me out? I am stressed and busy and under a lot of pressure also and can't find the time, and I don't get a minimum of 10 weeks holidays . I think don't think I will be clearing desk space for them any time soon. If they are not going to do my job why should I do theirs? Unless they want to share their pay...
