Shadenfraud is a German word to describe "enjoying the suffering of others..."
Leave it to them to have just the right word for that.
I bring it up because that's all Leaf Fans seem to have left. Shadenfraud over the Senators loss and subsequent ousting from the Stanly Cup playoffs.
That's too bad.
Yesterday I wasn't able to blog here but I was a busy commenter over at Mike Boons joint and his entry Happiness is a Sweep of the Sens!
How sad I thought. If ever there was a fan base that couldn't afford to throw stones at anyone it would be the Leaf Nation.
But there they are talking all sorts of trash.
This was from Mikes original entry:.....It's a fantastic feeling, but it makes me nostalgic for the days we used to knock the Sens out of the playoffs. It seems like yesterday I wrote this entry after we ousted the Senators in 7 back in 2004. We met the Sens in the playoffs 4 times in 5 years and took 'em out every single damn time. Sweet, sweet memories...
I wrote back: Are you high?
Sweet sweet memories?
Please.
At least Ottawa has done something the Leafs haven't in 4 years- make the playoffs and uh weren't they in the Stanly Cup finals last year?
Sure they sucked and lost but at least they were there, the Leafs just sucked and lost and went back for more sucking and losing.
Trish then chimed in:Last year I went to a few ottawa blogs and heckled them. This year I'm going to spare them the embarrassment. So the Leafs didn't make the playoffs, but there's nothing worse than going down in four straight... :D :D :D :D
I countered:"There's nothing worse than going down in 4 straight!"
Yes there is. It's not making the playoffs for 4 years and not being in the Stanly Cup finals since Sargent Pepper was a new release.
Holy crap. Figure it out Leaf fans Toronto is the laughing stock, not Ottawa. Why? Because your team is so God awful that all you have left is hating another team and the sweet memories of beating them in the playoffs. The playoffs you haven't been in sine the early part of this century.
And on and on it went. Frightening really if it wasn't so hysterical. I just don't get how Leaf Fans are so blind to the fact that Ottawa, as sucky as losing four straight and crapping out in the regular season after a great start is, it's still better than not making the playoffs and not making it to the Cup Finals since 1967!
But try as I might I can't get through.
This was from the last comment: We've only been reminded by the likes of howard that the team's performance has been lousy. But those proud of their team's under achievement are laughable, because evidently they don't grasp the goal of hockey, which is an ultimate one. There is no trophy for second place, or sixteenth after all.
Funny huh? A Leaf Fan talking about the "Under-achieving" and the "Ultimate goal!" Christ in a hand-basket don't these people hear themselves?
Shadenfraud gone wild.

Yup, I gotta agree with you humble. I don't think there's any point in throwing stones when you live in a glass house. Here's a new one someone told me the other day. LEAFS=loser even after forty years....
Pretty much sums it up.
But how about those Hab's losing 5-1 last night? Woo hoo Boston.

Yup, I gotta agree with you humble. Though I'm a dedicated leaf's fan I don't believe you should throw stones when you live in a glass house. Here's a new one someone told me the other day, LEAFS=losers, even after forty years....
That about sums it up. But how about those Bruines beating the Hab's 5-1. Go Bruins!!!!

Geoff
I agree with you agreeing with me.
I also applaud the Bruins beating the Habs.

I disagree with you both. My two favourite teams are the Leafs and ABO.
When the Leafs are down and out, that doesn't mean I can't be happy when ABO wins.
Luckily for me, ABO always wins. It's sorta like cheering for Tiger Woods.

Well HH I have agree( even though I quoted MB'S blog in an email to a Sens fan in the office) the leafs suck FAR worse than ottawa and will for at least 3 more years IF the managment changes. Maybe 40 more years if it stays the same( No bets there ;( ) I've read both Freddis and Milkes entries on this and I'm not sure where the anger comes from. I mean a little mocking is one thing but ...

O ya, and no Ottawa Senator Fan ever took pleasure when the Leafs didn't make it to the playoffs, right...?
Humble, you happen to be 'anti-leaf'. Not 'pro-any-other-team'. But 'anti-leaf'. There's a difference.
Thus, your stance in all matters of hockey (specifically regarding Leaf topics) must be read with that bias in mind.
It's easy to cheer for the best (a la Tiger Woods or the Red Wings) when they're winning, how hard is that?
A true fan likes a team for what they stand for, who they have on their squad, their jersey's colours, Provincial or State flowers, etc, etc, whatever.
But when your team goes into a funk (because ALL teams--& Tigers do), you don't bail on them. Even if it is an extended 40 year funk, you still have to support your team.
The Leaf fans I know do not plan the Stanley Cup parade route if the Leafs win 3 in a row in September.
The Leaf fans I know realize that Ottawa is (on paper) a much better team than Toronto. But they also realize that had Ottawa not won 15 in a row (was it?) back at the beginning of the season, they would not have made the playoffs either.
The Leaf fans I know wish the head office of MLSE could function properly and build for us a half decent hockey team. But then, I don't think there is another hockey team owned primarily by a teacher's pension fund.
The Leaf fans I know are not as delusional as 'anti-leaf' individuals seem to think they are.
When Tiger starts sucking (and he will eventually suck) will you still be devoting a week's worth of blogs prior to the Master's about Mr. Tiger? Or will you jump on the Immelmania bandwagon...
