The Hockey Night in Canada theme goes to.....CTV!
It's been saved and now our country will be free once again to pay too much for gas and drink weak coffee form Hortons. (Good sangwhiches though.)
Strange what ignites a passionate debate in this land. This theme has found a new home and there is relief amongst us all.
I love the theme. Back in the old 90's Fred and I used to play it as a background while singing happy birthday to people.
I also love the fact that this nice old women and her copyright lawyer outsmarted the CBC and got a nice little payday. Although it sounds to me like they were never in big hurry to sign with the corp and maybe were just waiting to see if CTV stepped up. And they did.
"Throughout our negotiations, CTV displayed a tremendous amount of respect for my family and the song," said Claman, an 80-year-old Vancouver native who now lives in England, said in a statement. " 'The Hockey Theme' means so much to Canadians, and we know it's in good hands with CTV."
But maybe the CBC will have the last laugh.
Moore said he applauded CTV for saving the song – both altruistically, because he believes it deserved to be saved, and selfishly.
"The song is going to be forever associated with Hockey Night in Canada and CBC. So I think CTV, in many ways, was smart to pick it up, but every time it's played, people are going to think of our broadcast on Saturday night."
No kidding.
Here's a version played simply on some crap-organ.

No, I'm going to think about how the CBC let the moast recognized song in Canada go and become another products identity....years and years of building their brand and poof gone to the competition!! It will make me laugh at the idiots at the CBC everytime I hear it....I will continue to identify that song with hockey thanks to CTV!!

Nice spin CBC. Since for a long time you where the only game in town. Defending "Canadian Culture" from the evil U.S. (well at least those of us that live near the US boarder.) (before Satalie TV)
You let this little gem slip though and now your following the American model of TV and "Let's make a relaity show" to find the next opening music theme for HNIC.
Here is a hint: why don't you get the cast of Air Farce to host this show ... I understand that they won't be doing anything after Jan 1st 2008.
Yet another reason to privatize the CBC.

This will do nothing but damage the reputation of CBC. It's great for CTV. CBC will be remembered for letting this song go because they didn't want to pay some so called "ransom" set by a woman who wrote the song 40-plus years ago. Clearly she just wanted to ensure their was some money for her estate. It's the CBC's image that will be hurt from this in the end.

Shows the socialist culture of the CBC, paying a per play per diem on the song over 40 years when they could have probably bought it out right years ago. Being in business I couldn't see not owning the song out right from day one, way to go CBC you were trumped by CTV.
Other than HNIC can anyone name any other CBC show?
