My pal Mike Boon will be sitting in on the Big Broadcast Friday morning. He has asked to "Live Blog" the show and sit in on all the action.
It should be mildly amusing and I thought I'd pass the info on if you care to check it out.
Go to TorontoMike and enjoy the ride.
It's after 6 as I write this and I've just finished prepping for tomorrow's show. It's a strange life this Radio thing. Between family, friends, my other 2 jobs and the morning show I don't have a lot of time left over. In fact as I've written here recently, I can't remember a busier time in my life...certainly not in the last couple of years.
I must say I love being back on the air for a number of reasons-the people, the laughs and the challenges-but mostly I love the immediacy of the job. Talking about the economy, the election, the Leafs(Ugh), the search for a new Hockey Night in Canada theme, meeting different people every day and discussing things with fascinating guests. I realize now how much I missed it when I wasn't part of this world.
Things move fast and it forces you to move fast with it.
Oh there's the getting up at 3:30 thing but that's also quickly becoming routine again.
I go to bed at 10pm, wake up between 3:30-3:45, get in my car at 4:10, get to work at 4:40 and on the air at 5:30.
The thing I'd forgotten is the adrenaline rush of doing a live show everyday. It's exhilarating and exhausting at the same time.
I'd also forgotten the constant jet-lag feeling you have from mid-afternoon on. The job is relentless. It's a new show every day and no matter how well you did Tuesday you have to start over and fresh the next morning. But let me tell you I'm so thank-full that I got the chance to do it again. I really am.
When I got fired in July of 06 I told a few friends that I hoped I hadn't done my last morning show and after being off for over 2 years, I now remember why.
Mike Boon loves his Leafs and that's fine but he is a realist and is willing to admit that the team indeed Sucks Giant Ass. (My words, not his.)
Check out this article from Macleans writer Steve Maich that MB has reproduced on his site. Very interesting and well worth the read.
One of my favorite passages. To be precise, however, the Leafs wield what economists call "monopolistic market power" — not quite the same as being a monopoly, but similar. Colin Jones, professor emeritus at the University of Victoria, has spent much of his career studying the economics of pro hockey. "Pretty much any study you look at, you'll find a very strong correlation between attendance and winning." But the Leafs, he says, are different. "They can do whatever the hell they like and the attendance and merchandise sales go up, and TV and radio contracts hold up. In terms of competitive performance, this monopolistic power is a very bad thing."
A bad very bad thing to be sure.
Go read the rest and then come back.
Mike Boon, friend and internet genius tipped me off about this.
After last weeks freaky good performance from David Cook (Hhdotcoom's pick to win this shindig)
everyone was talking about this cool rock version of Michael Jackson's Billy Jean.
The arrangement was mind-blowing but it was an homage to Chris Cornell's rendition. Ryan Seacrest mentions Cornell in his intro but it went largely unnoticed.
So here is the original arrangement from the dude who done it.
I was cruising the Boon site and came across this.
Very interesting piece called blogs in plain English.
One day I'm going to start me one of the Bloggy things.
Sounds like fun.
I take no joy in the fact that the Leafs suck.
Okay that's a lie. I do.
I enjoy it very much.
I feel bad for the Leaf fans (Leaf Nation!) because they are a hearty, mis-guided lot who no matter how much vomit-inducing shiza-hockey MLSE feeds them, they still support their team.
Well now it seems that at least one fan has had enough.
Go to The Boon and check out his Maple Leaf Eulogy. Sad times indeed.
(yes I know this is the second thing from mike's site today but this is why I originally went there then I found the other thing. So sue me.)
Some of you may have guessed that this is a pretty busy time for me. I'm now one of those guys that drives downtown everyday.
I used to wonder, "How do people do that?"
Well now I know, you just do.
I've been a little slack in the Hhdotcom world and I'm sorry but I've been out the door too early and home too late.
That's why I'm just going to stick up a couple of things and try and post some original drivel now and again for the next little while.
In the meantime I was over at BoonsBadASS site and saw this crazy cool version of RadioHeads Creep.
You will dig it but watch the full thing.
My pal Mike Boon who has been my web mentor for over a year now, never fails to tweak my interest with his little bloggy blog.
I checked this out the other day and not only do I dig the ad but I Lime-wired the song and now it resides nicely on my IPod.
Check this out. I betcha don't just watch it once.
It's a big night for Booner. Leafs are on the verge of another Stanly Cup winning season, just like the one they had 40 odd years ago.
Can't ya feel it?
Of course in order to go undefeated you have to win the first game and unfortunately that's against the Ottawa Senators, Canada's Team of Destiny.
Oops.
The papers are taking about the Leafs maybe making the playoffs this year and for my Leaf-Fan friends like Mike, I hope so.
I went to MB's site today as always to see what Leaf drivel he'd have in store and I came across this.
He also had an interesting piece I'd heard about concerning the price of prime-time commercial.
Yes for all your Mike Boon needs go to www.MikeBoon.com.
Then of course come back here.
I was perusing the Boon site as I am want to do. In between checking out pgatour.com and porn, I usually wander over to see what Toronto Mike is up to.
Apparently I'm not alone and the numbers are growing.
I dig the Mike man and If you haven't done it before go join the millions and check it out now.
Then of course come back here.
I'm on the phone with master mike boon and he directed me to one of his entries about Barry Bonds and what an over-inflated, under-whelming bid for the B-Ball record his quest has been.
Especially versus Hand Aarons
Check out the entry and click on the player to listen to a bit from Ken Burns doc.
Chill factor-very high. TorontoMikeBringsit.
Greetings Humblevillians. I'm Toronto Mike, the guy who held Humble's hand when he started this blog. I even managed to teach him a little HTML. Before taking over the Humble Howard online empire, I was a fan of a little radio show on CFNY called Humble & Fred.
Humble Howard is alive. I know this because I just spoke to him. For an unemployed dude, he sure vacations a lot. He's somewhere in the states right now doing something or other. I think it involves planes and such.
So don't worry, he'll be back spilling pure hilarity all over these pages before ya know it. In the meantime, you can hit the archives or visit the best site on the web, TorontoMike.com.
I was checking out The Boon today. He's been away for a few days so I thought I'd better catch up.
He's ranting about some slow-pitch pitcher who won't show up for games, some Leaf bit and some sweet pics of his kids on vacation. But this item caught my eye.
It's about all the crap Avril Lavigne has been taking over song stealing. First from Chantal Kreviazuk
and now from some 70's band called The Rubinoos.
Frankly I'm not seeing it.
Have a look.
Always good fun and fresh baked blogging at Mikeboon.com.
He is the online Yoda to my Obi Wan.
He is the Movable Type Earl to my Tiger. He is the wind beneath my wings.
Excuse me while I puke on my keyboard.
Okay, that's better.
I was checking out TO Mike as I am want to do and he had nice piece about the whole Sopranos ending thing.
I was cool with the way the series wrapped up. I understand that wasn't the case with everyone but Mike's entry has a lot to chew on.
Check it out here.
I know Mike Boon is happy today. The torturous 06/07 season is over and he won't have to endure the Leaf-less post season anymore.
Bonus? Well little Niky Andropov has been resigned and Mike is ecstatic. Check it out here and as always, do the right thing and go to Toronto Mike for all your local news, views and cashews.
Mike is passionate about The Leafs and Music and I'm not surprised this closure would impact him.
I can't help him with the Leafs, No one can, but it is the end of an era in Toronto and even someone who didn't grow up here can feel that.
Mike had this last night. Well TO Mike, the force is very strong in this one.
If your into Music, The Simpsons, or just interesting Toronto stuff check out the Boon daily.
I do.
I've got to go to Spencer's school for some parent thing this morning so I haven't got a lot of time to blog. Last night I was checking out my buddy Boon's site Toronto Mike and I came across a great link.
101 Greatest George Carlin Quotes.(I used one in the Falwell thing.)
Here's a few favs.
Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that!
Honesty may be the best policy, but it’s important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.
Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster is a maniac?
I had my Web-Mentor Mike Boon over on the weekend for some new web learning. He has some issues with my house-keeping here at hh.com and he also showed me some new crap. Actually some old crap that he told me once but I wasn't really paying attention.
I have been hot-linking pictures and apparently that's BAD.
Now I'm all up and at em with Flickr and my pictures will hosted there.
I was flying a big grown up plane called a Piaggio recently. It was a special set of circumstances that I found myself in the right seat of this awesome aircraft.
Why here it is now thanks to Flickr.
I learned how to manipulate the images and text in my publishing platform MovableType. For instance if I wanted to have the text wrap around a picture, I would simply do this. I would write a bunch of drivel so that there would be enough writing to go around the picture and blah blah blah.
This is actually me at the controls of the plane at 27 thousand feet going nearly 300 miles per hour. That's high and fast. Now I think I've written enough drivel, here's the shot.
I also learned how to align the text to the right and to center a picture if I want.
I can't imagine why I would but The Boon thinks these things are important. Let's try that little trick now.
I also got Gmail. Yeah baby I'm all Googled up. So far I don't mind it but it'll take a while to get comfortable and to use all the different features. But I love the Google peeps and MB insisted I get with it and sign up.
When it comes to this stuff he's not often wrong.
Next up a complete revamp of the look and feel of the site, but not for a while. There is only so much Geek-Info I can absorb at one time.
I guess there was a couple things I missed not watching Idol this week.Yesterday I made a snarky entry about being busy and only catching a couple of minutes of the show and not really missing much, but apparently there were a few things I would have liked.
I already put up the Elvis/Celine thing and now after checking Master Boon I found this.
It's Simon Cowell auditioning for American Idol on the Simpsons. Very cool.
In case you missed it...
I like Mike Boon.
I like Mike Boon's site Toronto Mike.
I like to go there 2, 3, 4 times a day.
I like Mike Boon's help on my site.
Okay, I'll start writing longer sentences. I was checking out Mike's crap yesterday and found this video explaining Rss feeds and readers.( I have them on the right hand side of my page...yeah right over there under my heavily air-brushed picture!)
For the first time since he tried to explain them to me I finally get it and after watching this, so will you.
Thanks Mike.
